Relate

A short blog about why ‘Relate’ is the name of an event about creativity.

A quick internet search for the definition of the word ‘relate’ comes up with three definfinitions:

1.       “to make or show a connection between”

2.       “feel sympathy for or identify with”

3.       “give an account of; narrate.”

Part of my work focuses on the development of creative practice, but another part focuses on what I call creative identity and allowing people to reclaim a connection with that.

What I call ‘creative identity’ is that innate part of ourselves that is creative. The part that combines various cognitions to imagine, make sense of our worlds (inner and outer), make new things and reinterpret the old.

We all have this capability, although it manifests in different ways in different people. My concern is that this innate capability somehow gets buried away; so many people don’t find the time to nurture it or manifest it. Because it’s innate, it can’t stop existing, but it can lay neglected.

I hate this. So, part of my work is helping people to seek out their creative side, explore how it is a part of their identity – or could be – and reclaim their confidence in exploring it and using it.

As part of this work, I created a resource called Relate, which contains some little word games to help people play with what creativity means to them as individuals. And I have developed a workshop to go along with this.

Why did I call these the event and resource ‘Relate’? Because I wanted people to make a connection with their creativity, I wanted them to identify with it, and I wanted them to be able to narrate what that meant for them.

My next Relate workshop is online, via Zoom, on the 22nd of February.

You have a choice of two times: 9am-10am or 8pm-9pm AEDT. Each participant will get a free copy of the resource emailed to them after the workshop. Bookings can be made here.

And if you want the resource, then you can buy it here.
